Basics of Dental Care for the Young and Old

  1. The simplest way to protect your teeth is to brush them twice a day with fluoride-containing toothpaste. Young children need help with brushing, so parents should assist their child with brushing until the child is 5-6 years old and ensure that the teeth are properly brushed every day, both in the morning and evening.
  2. It is important not to snack constantly between the three main meals and snacks. Monitor your eating habits and maintain enough time between meals so that the environment around your teeth can neutralize.
  3. Only water is suitable for quenching thirst.
  4. The most dangerous for teeth is white sugar, or sucrose. An acid attack caused by juice or a soft drink lasts an average of half an hour, while an acid attack caused by sticky biscuits can last several hours after eating.
  5. Visit the dentist regularly at least once a year.
  6. After eating, sugar-free (with Xylitol) chewing gum helps to neutralize the mouth. Chewing gum does not prevent cavities, but chewing stimulates saliva production, which helps neutralize cavity-causing acids.

Dental Caries

Dental caries is a chronic disease caused by oral microbes and carbohydrate-rich food and its prolonged contact with the tooth surface. It damages tooth enamel, which in turn causes dental caries. Dental caries is the most widespread chronic disease, affecting 80% of the population. Early forms of caries, known as early or primary caries, can be halted if the causes of damage are reduced.
